Seaford Wetlands:
Pedestrian & Cycling Bridge

An elegant, efficient lighting solution for a new pedestrian & cycling bridge over Kananook Creek.
SCOPE:

SCG Electrical Group were engaged to design and construct a lighting solution for Elite Crossings as part of their recent project for Frankston City Council featuring a new bridge over Kananook Creek in Seaford, Victoria.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

SCG were actively engaged in all key phases of the new Kananook Creek crossing including:

  • Design
  • Permits
  • Planning
  • Construction
  • Commissioning
KEY DELIVERABLES:

SCG's technicians were instrumental in the the key components required to provide the bridge with power, lighting and CCTV:

  • Liasing with local council representatives and engineers to design an effective lighting solution that met all techincal, environmental and safety regulations.

  • Partnering with LightRail to engineer a handrail lighting solution that was both functional and durable and also complied with public lighting standards.

  • Design/engineer concealed cable pathways and wiring locations.

  • Ensure wiring and cable pathways were built to specified plans.

  • Installation of ~220m metres of LED strip lighting to handrails across the bridge and approach ramps.

  • Custom design and manufacturing of a new main switchboard complete with metering, distribution, LED drivers and lighting controls Sections.

  • Power applications and new reticulation servicing the bridge lighting and CCTV.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS & CHALLENGES:

Engineering the cable sizing to required distances:
Sending low voltages up to 60 metres required careful consideration of cable run lengths, current draw, and cabling pathways to ensure the correct voltage was delivered at each LED strip and an even light spread was maintained across bridge.

Pre-wiring of cabling prior to the 750-ton crane lift:
Pre-wiring the cabling for handrails, lights, and CCTV was a key challenge requiring strategic planning during the construction phase. Ensuring cable lengths aligned perfectly with our inground conduits and penetrations into the bridge abutments required extensive planning.

This preparation was carried out whilst the bridge was assembled 100 meters from its final position. Following a 750-ton crane lifting the bridge into place, cables were successfully run to their final destinations.

Working closely with Elite Crossings from the outset, SCG Electrical Group successfully designed and implemented a sophisticated lighting solution that will ensure a safe, well-illuminated passage for pedestrians and cyclists crossing Kananook Creek for years to come.
